AdSense is perhaps the most popular way to make money online but is it for real? Can you still make money with AdSense? Can you make a living out of AdSense?
I will try and give you honest answers based on my experiences as an AdSense publisher but also examples from successful websites that are using AdSense.

What is Google AdSense?
The majority of Internet users are probably aware of Google AdSense but for the sake of keeping beginners up-to-date here is a quick overview of the program and major benefits:
- It is own by Google
- It’s a major source of income for Google. In 2018 earnings from AdSense were $24.1 billion for Q3 only!
- It is free for publishers
- Advertisers use the Google Ads program to advertise their products or services on AdSense websites. They only pay when someone clicks on their ads (PPC – Pay per click)
- Publishers receive 68% of the revenue and Google 32%. For example, if an advertiser pays $1 for a click then 68 cents will go to the publisher and 32 cents to Google.
- The cost per click calculation is based on an auction type system
- It is very easy to use
- It is the most reliable advertising platform on the Internet today and can generate the most revenue for publishers (compared to other similar PPC systems)
- AdSense besides content websites is also available for games, videos, mobiles, and search products.

How to make money with AdSense?
So, AdSense is free, easy to use, you get 68% of the revenue – what else do you need to make money with AdSense?
- You need a content-rich website
- You need a high-quality website
- You need a LOT of traffic
- You need to target the right keywords
- You need to fully comply with AdSense policies
- You need to have a website with a purpose and not an MFA (made for AdSense) website
1. You need a content-rich website
AdSense loves content-rich websites. Content can be of any kind (text, images, videos), and provided that it does not violate the AdSense content policies.
It is suggested though to have text content on the pages so that the AdSense crawler can understand what the page is all about.
AdSense is more suitable for websites that publish articles, case studies, how-to guides (like this one), and blogs.
Having a rich-content blog with content that helps people learn something or accomplish a specific task, is one of the best ways to make money with AdSense. If you don’t already have a blog, the resources below will help you get started.

2. You need a high-quality website
It’s not enough to publish content that does not violate AdSense content policies but you also need to provide high-quality content on a high-quality website.
Google is liable to advertisers for the money they pay so they don’t want their ads to appear on low-quality websites.
In the past this was possible but in the last couple of years, they have more strict policies on the type of websites you can run AdSense.
3. You need a LOT of traffic
AdSense is a good way to make money online and it is perhaps the easiest method provided that you have a good amount of quality traffic coming to your website.
I cannot give you an exact number because the amount of money you can make depends on the earnings per click (EPC) and click-through rate (CTR), but I don’t usually advise my clients to run AdSense on websites that have less than 300-400 unique visits per day.
In general, though, the more targeted traffic you have, the more money you can make with AdSense.
4. You need to target the right keywords
If you target the right keywords in your content then you can make more money with AdSense or with any other advertising platform.
What are the right keywords? Keywords that are:
(1) used by advertisers to promote their products – so the competition is greater and this raises the earnings per click (EPC)
(2) action keywords – action keywords are more effective since the users are more likely to ‘take action’ i.e. convert after they click.
Let’s look at the following example:
Assume that you have 2 websites in the weight loss niche that are running AdSense. Both websites receive the same amount of organic traffic and they have the ads in the same positions.
The first one is getting visitors searching for: ‘weight loss tips’, ‘how to lose weight’, ‘lose belly fat’ and the other one is getting traffic from keywords like: ‘why drinking water is important’, ‘what to eat after dinner’, ‘how many meals to eat per day’.
The first website is likely to make more money with AdSense because more advertisers are interested in those keywords so the number of available relevant ads will be greater.
Users are also likely to click the ads more often since users looking for tips or solutions to their problem are more likely to click on a relevant ad than users who are searching for general information.
This is also the reason why organic traffic is considered to be more valuable than any other form of traffic i.e. because it is highly targeted and converts better.
5. You need to fully comply with AdSense policies
As I said above, AdSense represents 1/4 of Google’s revenue so they take the whole program very seriously. While it is relatively easy for everyone to get an AdSense account, if you don’t play by their rules 100% you risk losing your account.
Even if you are an existing or new AdSense publisher make sure that you read their policies before implementing AdSense on your website.
Remove from your mind any ideas for tricking the system and always remember that they have hired the best people to make sure that nobody will be able to bypass their rules and policies.
6. You need to have a website with a purpose and not an MFA (made for AdSense) website
While AdSense is a great way to monetize a website, websites that are made for the sole purpose of running AdSense ads are not favorable by Google.
I have mentioned this in a previous post: 5 reasons you are not making money online and what is important to understand is that your website or blog needs to have a clear purpose that goes beyond making money with AdSense.
Yes, you can use AdSense to make money from an established blog that has lots of traffic and visitors.
You can also use AdSense to make some extra money from your website while selling your own products and services, but it’s not a very good idea to make a blog and start publishing mediocre content for the sole purpose of getting organic visits and then run AdSense to make money.
In the past this model may have worked, but not anymore.
Examples of websites making money with AdSense
To be more precise let me give you a couple of examples from websites that make money with AdSense.
While reading the examples try to relate these websites with what I have explained above and try to understand how they have applied in practice all the guidelines.
Example 1: Digital Photography School
DPS is owned by Darren Rowse, the all famous Australian ProBlogger. Darren was among the first people who managed to make a living online and if you read his story and income spread, AdSense played a very important role especially in the beginning.
Let’s see how he is utilizing AdSense on DPS.
He is using a number of Ads per page. One of the ads is ‘above the fold’ and others are below the fold but in the main content area. He also has an ad in the sidebar.
Example 2: Calorie Secrets
I also use Adsense on caloriesecrets.net. Instead of charging for the products we are offering (calorie counter, food tracker, diet plan), we decided to have the products free and use AdSense to monetize our content.
I am using 3 AdSense ads per page, 1 above the fold, 1 below, and 1 in the sidebar.
What is common in all the above websites?
After seeing the above examples, can you tell what they have in common?
- They are content-rich websites, offering top quality content
- They have lots of traffic
- They fully comply with Adsense policies.
- They fully comply with webmaster guidelines
- Although they have Ads above the fold, they are not interfering or damaging the user experience
- They all have their ads in the main content and sidebar. The reason is simple: Click-through Rate (CTR) in the main content area is greater than the sidebar and this translates to more clicks i.e. more money from AdSense.
- They all offer other services/products and are not operating for the sole purpose of running AdSense.
Can you make a living with AdSense?
I have explained above what it takes to make money with AdSense but can you also make a living? In other words, can you depend 100% on AdSense for all your expenses?
The answer is NO. The reason is not that you cannot make thousands of dollars per month with AdSense and make a good living, but because you cannot rely on a single source of income.
The online world is more dynamic than the offline World and you cannot assume that you will always have thousands of people visiting your website and clicking on Ads and you cannot assume that AdSense will exist forever.
Maybe it will, but you cannot base your income on it. Diversifying your risks and spreading your revenues is always the best practice either online or offline.
Conclusion
AdSense is perhaps the easiest, more reliable, and best way to make money online. Provided that your website meets the criteria explained above, you can enjoy a good monthly revenue by utilizing your content and the hours you spend online in the best possible way.
On the other hand, you should not rely solely on AdSense if you plan to escape from the 09:00-05:00 and make a living online.
Take a look at any example you want from people who work online. Everybody agrees that AdSense is great but you should have other income sources as well.

I’m thinking of starting a high quality food site and monetizing it with Adsense.
Although adsense will be my primary source of income I also plan on using Chitika ads and getting affiliate commissions by promoting other people’s health and fitness products.
According to Lisa Irby from 2createawebsite.com it takes a long time to build the traffic but once it comes,depending on your niche,you’re almost always guaranteed fat monthly payments from Google.

There is nothing wrong with starting a high quality blog with the purpose of running ads but besides the advice given in the article above, I wouldn’t use more than one advertising platform at the same time. I know that as you make traffic it is tempting to use AdSense, chitika, Yahoo Ads, affiliate links or any other platform but you run the risk of overdoing it and this will create the opposite results.
What you can do is once your blog is 6+ months old, and has a steady number of visits (I would say above 300 per day), you can test AdSense for a month, then Chitika for a month, then affiliates for a month and decide which one performs better and stick with that. If you think that most probably you won’t be doing this because its time consuming then stay with AdSense as they are great for beginners as well.
Also make sure that your ad placements do not violate any rules (avoid too many ads above the fold etc)

it depends on your website contents . some website got approval with just 10 blog. some website did not get approval with 50 blog.

It depends on the origin of your account. As stated in the adsense help center (https://www.reliablesoft.net/can-you-still-make-money-with-adsense/) for some countries you need to have a 6 months+ old website in order to be accepted.
If you already have an adsense account you can add to any website that is compliant with AdSense guidelines even if it is less than 6 months old.
My point with the 6 months is that if a website is less than that most probably it won’t have too many visits so adsense will not perform very well.

This article makes so much sense. I originally started blogging just for fun and figure if I can make some money on the side it would be awesome. Right now it pays for hosting and that’s awesome to me. I’m glad that I never had a thought of depending solely on a website making me retire early, would be nice though!
First time reading your blog. These are some great tips. I agree a person can make a good amount of money with adsense, but to rely solely on them is a huge mistake. I think for beginners they need to ask themselves how can they build trust with a targeted audience in their niche instead of how they can make money online. If you figure out the first part the money will follow.

The thought of relying on one source of income for the rest of my life, is really not my way of saying good bey to a 9 – 5, I don’t really think I’ll be saying good bey to my job, even when I have a steady income from ad sense. It is a fact as the articles says you have to have more than one source of income, if not you can run into many troubles. Having control of your finances is not just making more money, but protecting what you already have, whether it is a job or your own business.

yes you are right about multiple revenue streams – another thing to do is have multiple websites with adsense on…this reduces the risk somewhat – if you have 100 websites all earning $2 / day then that is a very good income – of course it takes a couple of years to get to that kind of level and is easier to do with one website in a good niche…but also more dangerous. Of course adsense could change or disappear – or you could get banned for no reason.

It’s not easy but it’s not impossible either. You can make money with adsense but it takes a lot of time and effort (as any other business) and my advice is to not to base your family income on adsense alone.

I have high traffic and often high CTR, I can incur what appear like nice earnings one day and by the next day all previous earnings are reduced to pennies. I imagine they deem most invalid clicks, so I kinda don’t agree with some of the tips here, yes you can do layout tweaks to increase CTR but we have no control of what Google deems valid. I’m not running some shady website enticing people to click, it’s a legit news website for a regional newspaper.

Yes you still can make money with it. I thought it would be impossible at first but 7 months later I am making $400 a month with Adsense. The thing about it is that i average like $14 a day with some days being even higher and that equals up to the 400 a month. You gotta be patient with adsense, that is the key to making money with it.

Excellent article. I have been making a lot of money using Adsense for the last few years now, and if anything, I have noticed that my revenue keeps climbing. In other words, Adsense for me has shown absolutely no sign of stopping. However, what I have been noticing with many is that they think Adsense is a get rich quick scheme. It is not. It takes a LOT of work to make good money with it. More work than many things.
In fact, what I have noticed is that top earners treat blogging as a full time job. That means that they are working at least eight hour days and putting in nights and weekends sometimes. Some like to say that you don’t need to do this, but for many, the truth is it does take a lot of work. Nothing good is easy.
Adsense is just one product for making money. Many people not only use Adsense on their blogs, but do consulting, write ebooks and use affiliate networks. Also, many people comment all over the internet to get views on their blog. Learning about SEO and trends and finding niches are yet other ways in which one must spend time. There is so much to learn about making money online.
Good luck to all of you who are serious about making money with Adsense and blogging! It can be done, but it takes time – a concentrated daily effort.

I will be honest – I ditched ClickBank and AdSense altogether from my blog….reason being there are too many merchants who’s products and services either get banned or leave ClickBank and as for AdSense, it gives visitors to your website another route to click and leave your site. If you have affiliate programs and products already on your site, you are guaranteed to make more money with them than through AdSense, unless your are driving some serious traffic.
I never recommend people use Adsense to make money. I know way too many people who have been kicked out of the program for “possible invalid clicks” as soon as they are ready to get their first check… Or they depend on the income to pay their bills, and all of a sudden they get kicked out of the program.
And it is a LIFETIME ban, not just for you, but also your family.
There is NOTHING you can do if you get kicked out either. I had adsense for 3 years before I hit the threshold to get paid, and on payment day, I got kicked out for possible invalid clicks. Now my situation is different from people placing ads on their website or blog. I was ONLY making youtube content, I never placed a single ad myself. And my content was drawing a lot of views (still is, as I average over 500,000 minutes watched per month to this day, with over 100,000 views a month) but I got the “possible invalid clicks” email, and appealed and got a computer generated rejection like so many others. Even though I couldn’t see who was viewing my ads, as it was all run by youtube and adsense.
I spend tons of money on my video gear and countless hours making content, and will never make a dime from all that work thanks to Google adsense.
So don’t waste your time, if it looks too good to be true… It probably is. Sure they trot out big name youtubers making money off of the system, but it sure looks like they live off the small guys who sign up and advertise for YEARS with adsense, and then when they finally hit the payment threshold they kick them out…

I have recently started a case study to “rehab” some older sites that have potential to yield some adsense income.
The idea of looking for action words is a great tip. The key for me has been to target long tail keywords or the low hanging fruit to drive traffic.
When I first started blogging this is something I was very bad at…….

Hello, this is a very well writen and informative article. I have been using adsense for a couple of months on my site but and earn enough to buy one maybee two cups of coffe a month. I have come to understand that it is the placement that is the key. As you say in your article, in-article placement is the way to go. It also, as I have come to understand, makes difference from where you get the traffic. The majority of my traffic is from stumbleupon and facebook, non-targeted and that is probably the reason that about 5000 uni. visitors a day only results in a couple of cups of coffe for me.
When should AdSense be added on a site? since beginning?

There is no use of adding adsense to a website that has zero or very low traffic. I think is better to wait until you have enough traffic (at least 100 unique visits per day) and then try to add adsense.

I fully agree that you cannot make a living with Adsense and this can prove to be a passive income. Your earnings depends on traffic and content as well. So if you want to earn big, then I assume you have to make a good website offering something to your visitors. Also, the ads must be well place so that your visitors view them clearly and will automatically click on them if they are relevant to your topic.
I’ve recently quit my job to take a break from corporate word and started using my free time to blog. And since I’m doing so I thought why not I earn some money out of blogging. Only to realize it is not easy. Been doing some research and found your article. This is really helpful. I understand now i really need to boost my traffic in order to monotize from ads. Using the right keyword and action keyword is really a big tip for me so I’m gonna work on that. I just got google adwords account so that I can use keyword planner for research purpose.

Nice article, and as you wrote, don´t quit your day job to live on Adsense. Even if you make good money you should never trust a single company, when you least expect it, they change their algorithm and you might loose almost all your traffic.
I experimented running adsense ads on ten different websites in ten different counties, all aggregating local news content targeting the local audience. Average earnings per website amount to $5. Total : $50 Per Month. Not bad as the amount is enough to keep these websites running. I also find $50 decent in the part of the world I reside in. I suppose one should not expect too much from the program.

Adsense is good for making money online (atleast for beginner bloggers), but you need a substantial amount of traffic first of all before adsense can pay you handsomely.
Everything depends on the targeted keyword per page and the niche itself entirely.
Traffic source is what you have to know if the advertisers are really paying high for the niche and its keywords from the region you’re targeting.

Excellent article! I recently got approved by Adsense, I am getting around $1 per day. I have noticed that the number of clicks have gone down since the start of February 2021. Do you have any tips to improve the click through ratio? Any help would be appreciated.
