Rampant copyright infringements[edit]

Hello. I come from English Wikipedia, and when a contributor is known to have 4-5 or more flagrant copyright violations, we open an investigation of all their contributions, because the violations we find are often merely the "tip of the iceberg". I wonder if any process is available here on Commons, where copyright is possibly much more likely to be infringed? As you know, I have examined the contributions of User:Thuy Ho and found the vast majority to be copyright violations. Administrators have mostly agreed with me, except for a few instances where you merely reverted because you couldn't find any evidence. I suggest that this contributor be investigated. I left some of his uploads alone because they appeared to be simple non-professional panoramic type snapshots that could be taken by anyone. But some people surely have a knack for stealing photos and presenting them as "Own work" and slipping by the copyright filter here. I find them once in a while coming to English Wikipedia and linking to their uploads. I strive to be thorough in wiping out their contributions when I can plainly see they are all copyvios. Offensichtliche URV[edit]

Hallo Túrelio,

mir fallen immer wieder offensichtliche URV's auf Commons auf. Schema immer gleich: Niedrige Auflösung für 2019/2020, fehlende Exif-Daten, Pkw-Modelle einer bestimmten Marke, immer wieder neue Accounts mit Ramschuploads (wiederum mit Exif - zur Tarnung?), unterschiedliche Länderkennzeichen und andere Details (mediterrane Landschaft mit Olivenbäumen passt nicht zum tschechischen Kennzeichen). Wegen der niedrigen Auflösung und Unschärfe gehe ich von Screenshots aus Videos aus. Betrifft bis dato folgende User:

Deletion request question[edit]

Hi Túrelio, can you help me see how you can save the images that were nominated in this deletion request [1] Many of those images were uploaded 10 years ago with licenses in the public domain (Egypt, Lebanon, Syria) respectively. A week ago a reviewing user nominated them for deletion saying that the source was not specified. The images are in the public domain from the beginning of the last or mid-century, are all over the internet and are part of the cultural heritage of those countries that used them for their publications in the newspapers. Speedy deletes[edit]

Hallo Túrelio; ich habe in letzter Zeit ein paar offene DRs geschlossen, bei denen auf die Datei in der Zwischenzeit ein Schnelllöschantrag gestellt wurde, den du danach umgesetzt, aber dabei den DR offengelassen hattest, Beispiel Commons:Deletion requests/File:Robert Blaich.jpg (DR-Template stand auch immer noch auf der Seite). Wäre vielleicht ganz praktisch, wenn du in solchen Fällen auch gleich den Löschantrag erledigen würdest. Filemover rights request[edit]

Hi there. Several days ago, I put in a request for filemover rights over at Commons:Requests for rights, and the guideline at the top of the page says "[i]f your request has remained unanswered for several days, consider personally asking an administrator".

As I said in my nomination, I'm a prolific file uploader with an unfortunate bad habit of typos in filenames, and I would sooner take on the responsibility of correcting such filename errors myself than burden other editors with my mistakes. (In fact, the reason why your username stuck out to me at Special:ListUsers/sysop was because you've answered a few of my rename requests yourself!)

If there's anything you can do to speed the process along, it would be most helpful and appreciated. Thank you.

Comment[edit]

The Cfccreates flickr ID has been a rich source of images of people associated with movies. I've uploaded well over a thousand images they posted on flickr, and about 400 headshots I cropped from those images.

This is the first time they have requested the deletion of an image. I didn't want to say this at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kathryn Emslie at a CFC event in L.A. - Honouring John Fawcett and Graeme Manson (16740223837).jpg - but I think the explanation for the deletion is vanity. Ms Emslie is part of the management team at the Canadian Film Centre. Whoever runs the cfccreates flickr id is presumably a lot more junior than Ms Emslie.

Anyhow, since was one they uploaded, I think File:CFC in L.A. - Honouring John Fawcett and Graeme Manson (16740223837).jpg is unobjectionable.

It never occurred to me to consider the flatteringness of the crop of Ms Emslie. But I don't think File:Virginia Rankin at a CFC event in L.A. - Honouring John Fawcett and Graeme Manson (16740223837).jpg is particularly unflattering. ~~Anyhow, she isn't CFC management.~~ So I am happy to let sleeping dogs lie.

in der Tat. Das ist das typische Bild, wenn der ursprüngliche Domaininhaber eine Seite aufgegeben hat. Die paar Bilder, die ich mir angeschaut habe, sind ja alle 2015 hochgeladen worden. Da sie anscheinend im Kontext irgendeiner Aktion hochgeladen wurden (es gibt ja sogar einen eigenen Baustein), denke ich mal, dass die Lizenz heute nicht unbedingt hinterfragt werden muss; allerdings könnten Nachnutzer durch den heutigen Inhalt des Quuelllinks verärgert werden. Ich werde mal meine Kollegen fragen, ob wir für solche Fälle eine etablierte Vorgehensweise haben. du meine Güte. Man kann auch etwas überempfindlich sein. 1) nicht ich habe die Kategorie zur Löschung markiert, sondern User:Ruff tuff cream puff. Die gewählte Löschrationale wird dabei automatisch in die edit-summary übertragen. Da ich heute zig leere Kategorien gelöscht habe, genau aus dem Grund, dass sie leer waren (CSD C2), ändere ich nicht jedesmal manuell die edit-summary. 2) Der hier vom SLA-Steller benutzte Löschgrund "CSD G1" ist einer der ganz offiziellen Criteria for speedy deletion. Da die Kat. leer war, hatte sie zumindest jetzt "no valid content", nämlich gar keinen. Das nun als "ungemein beleidigend" und "ehrabschneidend" zu etikettieren, dazu fällt mir nichts mehr ein. Anyway, ich habe den SLA-Steller aufgefordert, für solche Fälle in Zukunft CSD C2 statt CSD G1 zu nehmen.--Túrelio (talk) 21:41, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm uploading new version by https://svgtranslate.toolforge.org and I thought the original language is replaced by English so I created that file, however after that I realized that the file would have different language when it linked in Wikipedia and separate file isn't needed. Hi @AntiCompositeNumber, sorry for forgetting to answer your question for that long time. When deciding deletion-requests by uploader I take some liberty after judging the overall situation. In this case, the 2 icons were unused and weren't unique works by the uploader, but simply copied from a still existing website (GitHub). So, in case of need, they could easily be re-uploaded from the original source (or restored on Commons). Anton Docher pictures[edit]

Hi Turelio, you intend to delete the Anton Docher's related photos. Before to do so, here’s what I know about these pictures. I found them in an old family album in my grandparents' attic. They were sent to his brother (my grandfather’s grandfather) by Padre Docher himself, who was then a missionary in America. My family being affiliated with the padre. They date for the most part from the 19th century or early twentieth (except that of the burial which is of 1928) and are the work of one or more unknown authors (no signature present on both sides). So I scanned the original prints, found in the album, to donate them to Wikimedia Commons thinking that they had historical (even modest) importance. I don’t know how to assign them a rights license or anything, I did my best to improve the license, but I don’t know if that’s enough. Biographien[edit]

Guten Tag. Beschaeftige mich hier seit Jahren als IP mit verschieden Biographien, vor allem betreffend Zweite Polnische Republik. Bei Bearbeitung der Vermissten Personen baue ich ein Info über den zuletzt bekannten Verbleib der Person ein (weil man soetwas in wikidata nicht einbauen kann oder ich habe keine Ahnung wie man es tut). Solche Infos werden sehr oft von "User:Микола Василечко" enfernt und revertiert. Es gibt Biographien mit sehr seltenen Nachnamen die wirkliche "Einzelstuecke" bei der Wikiprogrammen sind und deswegen existieren keine automatischen Kategorien fuer eben solche seltene Namen. Fuer solche Faelle benutze ich die Schablone "DEFAULTSORT:Nachname, Vorname" damit alles richtig kategorisiert wird ... und hier das naechtste Problem : "User:Микола Василечко" enfernt diese defaultsort Schablone und danach es wird nach dem Vornamen kategorisiert. Wenn er schon so etwas tut dann soll er auch dafuer sorgen das die Dateien (die von ihm revertiert werden) nach dem Nachnamen kategorisiert werden. Da ich systematisch mit Bibliothek und Buch-Quellen arbeite ist wirklich sehr schaedigend wenn ich immer wieder in meiner Arbeit zurueckgeworfen werde. bei der Aufarbeitung der Humboldtfotos habe ich was verwechselt, 29 Bilder in der inzwischen korrekt umbenannten Chan Chan Kategorie laufen fälschlicherweise unter "Vichama-Kultur", beim ersten Foto habe ich schon eine Verschiebung zu "Chimú in Chan Chan 01" beantragt. Gibt es ein Tool, um die 28 anderen umzubenennen, mit dem ich das vielleicht selber machen könnte? Und noch was: Die Kategorien für die Einzelthemen der Humboldttour habe ich jetzt mit dem Datum vorne benannt, so wie wir das früher bei den WAF-Exkursionen praktiziert haben. Dazu setze ich jeweils noch die Themenkategorie wie bei wie bei den umzubenennenden Bildern "Chan Chan". Sollen die Datumskategorien mit hidden versehen werden. I came across this file via en:WP:THQ#Johnny Mcghee where the uploader was asking about it at the English Wikipedia Teahouse. For what it's worth, I think the uploader means well, but perhaps might be getting some bad advice. I found this image on pt.WP uploaded under a fair use rationale. As the image was uploaded on Flickr under a 2.0 license, I decided to upload it here and nominate the Pt.WP image for deletion. However, when the image was already uploaded I find out that another identical, but with lower resolution, image was uploaded here sometime ago. What to do in this case? Regards.

He uploaded several images from Flickr accounts that only uploaded images to be uploaded on Commons. the account in question seems to be a sort of complex case. While he has many uploads deleted as copyvios, the above mentioned image, the 2nd version (low res), got an OTRS-confirmed permission. That aside now; my query regarded more a couple of files which were I strongly believe deleted unnecessarily ; in a way I believe was most unfair and done with no regard!

Firstly twitchy bird' I never realised was obscene or even explicit [may be I should knit some pants for it?] next time I see it?

2; Globe nude dance sequences; is a normal almost idealistic portrayal of normal human [nude] form; it is NOT EXPLICIT SEXUALLY, it instead represents a contrast to other files, which are gone, by its too good to be true setting [archive video ] in a lovely field with blue sky [and no rude bits happening!]]

This film is in tradition of the nude in art and was placed separately to other explicit titles deliberately so as to show a complete contrast to the male human nude representation as a moving image. You will not find that ideal setting now as that was years ago preserved on analogue 8mm tape.

Forgive me for going on here in your 'barn star' box but wikimedia is very confusingly layed out [and with awful spell checker too} I am not usually this bad at typing!

If the other files offended so much; I can put up with that. But tell me why a small 'twitchy bird. and incidentally a photo of a red poppy, and naturally photographed video of male nude form without any sexual content, have being sliced out of wikimedia commons for good?

What will you be left with?? A few almost Victoriana bodies covered with pantaloons ? or for that matter many offensive still existent images which personally offend me too [of which age captions printed may actually be illegal}? Have a look and you will find two photos which I think are suspicious on the now emptier page on [Penis]. Sorry to say that rude word again..!

Hi. Sorry to bother you but this user is still making copyright violations and has uploaded one of the images you deleted again: File:Charles-albanese-prison-mug.jpg.

In addition the other images they added a while ago: File:Ronald Turpin.jpg, File:Turpinmugshot.jpg, are also copyright violations. The tags they added to these pages are not correct because the images were made after 1949 and the publisher was not a person and therefore has not died. Could all be deleted? How we will see unregistered users[edit]

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

You speedy deleted a large number of categories here as "empty and reduntant category", despite them only having been emptied shortly beforehand by an editor who was then blocked for it. These deletions were clearly out of process: because this is a common problem, our policy for deleting "empty" categories requires that the admin first check they're properly emptied (these weren't) and that they have been empty for long enough for other editors to react first (these were deleted within a couple of hours, even before the ANU thread was opened)

A number of these are still populated but deleted. See Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/User_problems#Cleanup

I assume you are talking about File:DmitryKuplinov.png, right? Per your own description, it is a screenshot from this Youtube-Video. This video is under the Youtube-standard license, which is not compatible with our license policy. If the video-creator wanted to allow re-use of his video, he could have put it under a CC license, which some Youtubers do. Hi, see User talk:Danielpdarth, no warning? Re-uploading is a bad choice, as it violates our policy and might even result in a block. The correct way to dispute a speedy deletion, as in such a case, is taking it to COM:UDR, where it can be discussed. Sure, uploader may be the owner, whatever that means. The copyright is usually with the photographer. In addition, this image is found also here. All this is the usual circumstancial pattern for a copyvio, not a solid proof, of course. GeoHack[edit]

Hallo Turelio! Leider funktioniert der GeoHack in den Listen der Baudenkmäler nicht mehr. Wenn man den Standort anklickt, kommt eine weiße Seite mit User: The DJ. Da das beim Auffinden von Baudenkmälern sehr wichtig ist, wäre es ganz toll, wenn diese Möglichkeit wieder richtig funktionieren würde. Außerdem steht bei meinem Denkmal in der Hermann-Roth-Straße 22 in Baierbrunn, daß die Löschung dieser Seite seit Oktober 21 zur Diskussion steht. You are not the only one to make such an experience. ;-) Not sure what the true reason is, might be a descrepancy between a marker in the JPEG file and how the mediawiki software sees it. I would recommend not to make such rotations manually, but simply to wait til the bot, which is activated by the template, which I put onto the file, has done his job. This works fine at least for JPEG files. Files in TIFF format need to be rotate manually, but they don't produce this problem. --Túrelio (talk) 17:43, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Actually the terms of use state that "The use of the Website is free of charge and all content is subject to a Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0 license." This is slightly different from what they write at the article page quoted by Bquast and quite inconsistent on the part of Geneva Solutions. We have to consider though that the image is not Geneva Solutions content, but was provided and/or created by UNICEF according to the caption. the problem is the contradictorial evidence:

1) below the article they state: "Geneva Solutions content is licensed under CC-BY .."

2) in the caption at the bottom of the image (i) they credit the image to "UNICEF". So, is the image still "their content"?

3) on their ToU-page[13] they state at "2. Use of the website": a) intended exclusively for personal or professional use for non-commercial purposes. b) Any further or alternative use, particularly the ... its distribution to other systems, is only permitted with our express explicit permission. c) all content is subject to a Creative Commons CC BY-SA 4.0.

you are likely not talking about this one File:Portrait of Angelique Houtkamp.png, right? (per The Guardian it's by Christopher Bradford/Courtesy of Ebury Press)

Nowadays any photography is considered having copyright, independant of the profession of the actual photographer. So, the image you are talking about, needs to be considered as copyrighted.

Now, please ask your photographing friend whether he is willing to release said image of you under a free license, which allows - more or less - any kind of use for free. If he agrees, ask him how he wants to be credited (mentioned). The free licenses, we prefer to recommend her on Commons, require all re-users to credit the photographer, as he/she wants to be credited. If he does not want to be credited by his real name, he can invent an artificial name (pseudonym) or an "artist name". If this decision is taken, you can upload said image on Commons, but add to the description the following code {{OTRS pending}} . Thereafter, you need to prepare a permission-text, using either the text in the grey square on Commons:Email templates#Email message template for release of rights to a file or, if you prefer Dutch language, the text in Commons:E-mailsjablonen. You need to customize the text by adding 1) the filename (or complete URL) of the uploaded image, and 2) by adding the precise name of the choosen free license. I, personally, would recommend you to choose either the unported (international) Cc-by-sa-4.0 or one of the following two, Cc-by-sa-3.0-nl or Cc-by-3.0-nl, which are adapted to the laws of The Netherlands, but still valid worldwide. Finally, send the customized permission-text per email to your friend, ask him to date and sign it and to send it (by himself) to [email protected] (VRTS). Hi this image is removed for no reason. I personally asked for the photographer to upload it to wikipedia and the owner Tayfun Ozberk uploaded it. You can also see it in the twitter page comment section. In one of the comments he says that it is possible for this petition of Wikipedia upload. Since the owner of the image has its consent. Hi Metuboy,

if I understand you and the Twitter-post correctly, he gave a sort of permission for "use on Wikipedia", right?

Regrettably, that is not sufficient for uploads to Commons. Per our policy COM:L, we need a release under "free license", such as CC-BY oder CC-BY-SA for example, which allows other to re-use the image for free, provided they credit the photographer, as he/she wants to be credited. So, to get this done, you should contact the photographer, either on Twitter or eventually better per email and ask him, whether he would be willing to give such a release. As a photographer he probably knows what CC (Creative Commons) licenses are. Our policy requires that there is also no restriction for commercial use; so, CC-BY-NC is not acceptable. I am aware that not every photographer will agree to such terms. Alas, it's not my idea, it's our policy and I can't change that.

Now, in case he agrees, you need to go to Commons:Email templates, copy the text in the square with gray background, enter the filename of the image and the choosen license, and send the customized permission-text to the photographer, ask him to read it, and, if he agrees, to date and sign it and to send it directly (by him) to [email protected] . --Túrelio (talk) 15:50, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
