Search in the deletion logsEdit
Hello, is there a way to search for some selected key words in the deletion log. E.g. yesterday I deleted files such as File:Kris Kourtis photo shoot.jpg. Is there a way to access to a list of all files deleted (by all administrators) and that contain "Kris+Kourtis"? Christian Ferrer (talk) 20:07, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- Here you are quarry:query/61111: 269 files. 4nn1l2 (talk) 21:14, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
- @4nn1l2: Very great thanks you. Is there a way to display additional infos for each files? such as the deleting administrator(s) or/and the uploaders. I ask because I blocked more than 15 socks who uploaded (some of) those files but I wonder if some socks have escaped me. If I can find quickly the files that were not deleted by me it will help me to find potential additional socks. Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:33, 30 December 2021 (UTC)

Deletion notice language links are brokenEdit
If you look at any file that has been nominated for deletion, at the bottom of the deletion notice there is a list of blue-linked languages under the heading "Click here to show further instructions." If you click on the English link you get only another notice that says "This template has been nominated for deletion." If you click on one of the other languages (I tried several) you get the template deletion notice helpfully translated into that language. This is an embarrassment. What is the best way, besides this posting, to get attention to this problem?--agr (talk) 13:49, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- @ArnoldReinhold: I think the links are working as intended, but the layout isn't as clear as it should be. The text "Click here to show further instructions" is not a heading for the list of languages; rather if you click on that text (for instance on the word "here"), the further instructions appear in-line. The list of languages is to allow you to see the template in a different language if it's ended up being displayed in an inappropriate one for you. I wonder if arranging to keep a horizontal rule displayed after this line would make it clearer that it's not connected to the languages underneath. --bjh21 (talk) 18:59, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Bjh21: I agree it would help to add a line between the Click here... and the language links. I would also make the word here blue to give readers a specific target distinct from the language links. That would match the usage in the second line of th etemplate.
- But the language links are completely broken, and it is easy to reproduce. (So we are both looking at the same place, I was using File:Turkish Policy Quarterly.jpg as a test case, just because it is a recent nomination.) If you click on any language link (this time I tried a bunch more) you get a template taking about removing Template:Delete/xx, where xx is the language code, e.g. for Neederlands, you get to Template:Delete/nl The text says "Dit of deze template is genomineerd voor verwijdering." If you the click on "'hier"' in "Voor overleg hierover, zie hier. " which should have taken you to the deletion discussion for File:Turkish Policy Quarterly, instead you are taken to "Commons:Deletion requests/Template:Delete/nl" which was closed "keep" about a year ago. From what I can see, some vandal was nominating many of these Delete templates for deletion. Perhaps in the process of restoring order, something broke.--agr (talk) 02:09, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
- I added my report to Template talk:Delete. Maybe this discussion should move there.--agr (talk) 17:22, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Template:Extracted fromEdit
Hello!
There's something broken with {{Extracted from}}. See transclusion at File:Wieś Ilustrowana, marzec 1911.jpg.Jonteemil (talk) 19:49, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonteemil: AFAIC, this edit caused the problem (though made in good faith). FYI,
<onlyinclude>a</onlyinclude>b
is equivalent to<includeonly>a</includeonly><noinclude>b</noinclude>
. When changing fromonlyinclude
to includeonly, they forgot to wrap the rest innoinclude
so as to prevent them from appearing on transcluding pages. This fix should have done that, but it seems that A1Cafel unintentionally left the language bar out. In short: Problem solved. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 21:55, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Template:Trademarked/zh-hansEdit
Template {{Trademarked}} transclude a template with translate extension enabled. However, when checking the simplified Chinese translation of this template, I found some text are marked with red background said "Outdated translations are marked like this". As pages can no longer be translated to simplified Chinese (zh-hans), those message could not be updated anymore. Could anyone give a suggestion about how to fix this issue? Also same issue on tranditional Chinese translation. Thanks. Stang★ 18:25, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- A
oauth_consumer
variable has been added to the AbuseFilter to enable identifying changes made by specific tools. [1] - Gadgets are now able to directly include JSON pages. This means some gadgets can now be configured by administrators without needing the interface administrator permission, such as with the Geonotice gadget. [2]
- Gadgets can now specify page actions on which they are available. For example,
|actions=edit,history
will load a gadget only while editing and on history pages. [3] - Gadgets can now be loaded on demand with the
withgadget
URL parameter. This can be used to replace an earlier snippet that typically looks likewithJS
orwithCSS
. [4] - At wikis where the Mentorship system is configured, you can now use the Action API to get a list of a mentor's mentees. [5]
- The heading on the main page can now be configured using MediaWiki:Mainpage-title-loggedin for logged-in users and MediaWiki:Mainpage-title for logged-out users. Any CSS that was previously used to hide the heading should be removed. [6] [7]
- Four special pages (and their API counterparts) now have a maximum database query execution time of 30 seconds. These special pages are: RecentChanges, Watchlist, Contributions, and Log. This change will help with site performance and stability. You can read more details about this change including some possible solutions if this affects your workflows. [8]
- The sticky header has been deployed for 50% of logged-in users on more than 10 wikis. This is part of the Desktop Improvements. See how to take part in the project.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 January. It will be on all wikis from 13 January (calendar).

Can't upload a replacement fileEdit
I have tried several times to upload a new version of the file at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&wpDestFile=Sponge_fishing_LCCN2003666909_restored.jpg&wpForReUpload=1 The original is 16 MB and the new version is 22 MB. Every time I try, the upload ?times out? and I get a message like this: Request from 2602:304:5eab:489:74d6:4c86:4ad4:cc10 via cp4032 cp4032, Varnish XID 535415660 Error: 503, Backend fetch failed at Thu, 13 Jan 2022 02:47:41 GMT I am not running any memory-intensive programs. Please help. Downtowngal (talk) 02:54, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Downtowngal: Did you try the Upload Wizard instead of using the direct upload form? The Wizard uses chunked uploads which should enable the upload process of larger files. De728631 (talk) 19:12, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- Since one year or two I have the same issue and 95% of time I don't manage to upload new versions of big files (the upload never end until an error message saying that I must try again), the last exemple was 3 days ago, I managed to upload a new version by uploading it firstly into my Flickr acount and then to upload here the new version from Flickr. Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:33, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- No, I haven't because I am not familiar with the process of saving the new file uploaded via Upload Wizard as a replacement for an existing file.Downtowngal (talk) 19:53, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- I always used the chunked upload script for this, as its the only thing that's even vaguely reliable. It also works well to bypass the Upload Wizard (which is almost impressively subfunctional if you already have a template to use) and the basic upload form, which will not do chunked upload, has a 100MB limit and will sometimes fail. The script is User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js, and it will happily upload over existing files as well as allow you to create a file page without a file and upload the file into it (thus bypassing the upload forms entirely). Inductiveload (talk) 23:52, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, but it's too technical for me. May I suggest that solving this problem in an ordinary-user-friendly way be added to a "fix Wikimedia" wishlist. Downtowngal (talk) 22:47, 20 January 2022 (UTC)
- @De728631: Reuploading actually does seem to work with the Wizard, see for example File:Mushroom in Germany DSC08609 (14954113044).jpg. Just select the filename of choice to the same as the existing filemame you want the file to be uploaded to.Jonteemil (talk) 20:35, 21 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Downtowngal: Look what Jontemil wrote above. Apparently you can use the Upload Wizard when you enter the existing file name as a target. De728631 (talk) 01:39, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Is whitelisting specific albums of a blacklisted Flickr author technically possible?Edit
There is this Flickr user with literally thousands of public domain images that are wrongly licensed and because of the consistent mislicensing of files they were blacklisted a long, long time ago. Now I fully understand why they're blacklisted and because of the sheer amount of bad files on their account I don't expect them to ever get removed from the blacklist.
But... They have dozens of albums which are fully composed of public domain photographs and postcards that were published before 1948 (which would make them in the public domain according to Vietnamese law) and because the person uploading these is a collector of rare and old Vietnamese photographs that can basically be found nowhere else on the internet (excluding re-shares of their uploads), is it possible to request for specific albums to be whitelisted so I could upload those? --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 22:52, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

- @ShakespeareFan00: I’ve just used Pywikibot on Commons yesterday, without any extra authorization. The error message says Failed OAuth authentication for commons:test—real Commons should be
commons:commons
, you tried to edit Test Commons. (Please note that Test Commons is also a SUL wiki, so as soon as you click the link, your account will be created, and you’ll simply get no results instead of the no account error.) You should pass -lang:commons to the script. (I know commons is not exactly a language, but that’s how Commons’ family file is defined…) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:02, 16 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. The relevant results are here https://public.paws.wmcloud.org/4407/commons-misnested-templates.txt , Unfortunately I can't edit a number of these even though replacing SMALL around a list is a trival taks to perform. Perhaps if you have the ability to edit protected pages you would be able to reduce the size of the list a little bit?
- @ShakespeareFan00: The linked .txt file is completely empty for me—but no problem, I can just generate the list for myself, which is actually much better, as fixed pages immediately disappear from it. I’ve already removed some 400 pages from the list yesterday with a single edit (the list shrunk from 1422 entries to 1008 entries), but I may continue if/when I have time. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 00:46, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

- When using WikiEditor (also known as the 2010 wikitext editor), people will now see a warning if they link to disambiguation pages. If you click "Review link" in the warning, it will ask you to correct the link to a more specific term. You can read more information about this completed 2021 Community Wishlist item.
- You can automatically subscribe to all of the talk page discussions that you start or comment in using DiscussionTools. You will receive notifications when another editor replies. This is available at most wikis. Go to your Preferences and turn on "Automatically subscribe to topics". [9]
- When asked to create a new page or talk page section, input fields can be "preloaded" with some text. This feature is now limited to wikitext pages. Corrupt or unreadable file in Wikimaps WarperEdit
I am trying to georeference this map file: File:Admiralty Chart No 1667 Rhodes Island, Published 1862, Corrections to 1967.jpg. I have changed the template from Information to Map, and added it to the warper (as I have done for many maps previously). But the map image does not appear when I click on show or rectify - I get the broken link icon. When something like this happens I would normally just remove the file and add it again, but I can't see a way to do this in the warper. Help appreciated! Kognos (talk) 22:47, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
external linksEdit
Recently I noticed what I regard as a disturbing change in the behavior of the external links special page.
I upload what I regard as good images from flickr. I create a category like Category:Files from RDPixelShop Flickr stream, if we don't already have one for that flickr user.
I used to check to see if we already had some files from that individual. The description templates for those images should contain a link to those individuals' main flickr page in the author field. Up until recently, external links used to be able to find all images that had been uploaded properly.
And, recently, that stopped working. Recently external links stopped reporting those links, and only reported links in category pages.
Should I assume someone made this change on purpose? What possible value could there be to a change like this? Let's revert to the previous much more useful behaviour please. Geo Swan (talk) 05:30, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Searchnotincat gadget proposalEdit
A proposal has been made in the Community Wishlist Survey to change the behaviour of Commons' Searchnotincat gadget. This is probably a small-ish change, but one that might need community consensus. The Community Tech team usually doesn't work on gadgets (unless we're porting them to become extensions), so I thought I'd ask here if anyone could help with making this change. See discussion on the proposal. Thanks! SWilson (WMF) (talk) 01:18, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- I've forked the gadget to User:Samwilson/Searchnotincat.js and made the proposed changes. — Sam Wilson ( Talk • Contribs ) … 04:15, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
Meitar CollectionEdit
NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, you have mentioned in COM:AN/U that "Mass-renaming with regex is something that people at COM:VPT". Could you be kind and do the renames. I have checked and still 6,614 files don't have the two brackets. All in the Category:Meitar Collection. I will check the results using patscan. -- Geagea (talk) 10:39, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Doing… NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 10:47, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you very much.much appreciated. -- Geagea (talk) 11:34, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Geagea: Are you sure that there are only 6600 files left? I checked all of 50180 files in that category and found 33540 "problematic" files, in which 6596 + 6937 + 6891 + 5001 = 25425 have a left bracket and 8115 have none. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 12:02, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I can send to you the Exsel file uf you want. -- Geagea (talk) 12:08, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- There are in a total about 32K files need only ")". and exactly 6,614 need both of them "(" and ")". -- Geagea (talk) 12:10, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Stats don't seem to be correct. You can go ahead and move them. Categorize them into a temp cat, then (enable regex):
- 25400: Replace
^(File:.+ )(\(\d+)(\.jpg)$
with$1$2)$3
- 8100: Replace
^(File:.+ )(\d+)(\.jpg)$
with$1($2)$3
- 25400: Replace
- This is your work, unfortunately. I don't have
noratelimit
and therefore cannot do 33500 renames swiftly, but admins (and bots) do. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 15:05, 27 January 2022 (UTC)- Yes the 8,115 is correct. I have checked it now. If you can do the 8,115 files without the two brackets it's ok to me. I think Mass Rename Gadget can work also in the way. Replace "1.jpg" with "1).jpg". It simpler to me. -- Geagea (talk) 17:21, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- i think it's not ok to move those 8k files without brackets right now to only add the brackets. you better start a discussion on VP to ask for approval. RZuo (talk) 21:10, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
- Shouldn't have touched them... but I renamed 750 or so already. Stopped for the time being. NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 07:23, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- RZuo, I explained myself at COM:AN/U. Please raise your objection there. All are my own uploaded files and I want to change theme. Our policy allow it. -- Geagea (talk) 08:25, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better." and you are trying to do that on a massive scale, so you should ask on VP whether that's appropriate at all. if i were a sysop i would have blocked you immediately because you're doing 30k nonsensical edits. RZuo (talk) 10:09, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- I do explained my self at COM:AN/U. They are not "because the new name looks a bit better" or "nonsensical edits" but part of file structure "File:meaningful name (file id).jpg". This structure is important to me as the uploader. If you disagree or raise your objection to COM:AN/U. -- Geagea (talk) 10:20, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Error when opening fileEdit
Hello!
When pressing on File:LOGOVR-Zahlungssysteme.tif so you come to https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ce/LOGOVR-Zahlungssysteme.tif the file isn't rendering. Does anyone know why? The reason to why the colors of the file is orange at the top but pink down in the file history section I assume is because of phab:T272364 which should be unrelated.Jonteemil (talk) 22:07, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonteemil Most browsers don't have support for TIFF files, so you wouldn't be able to view it in your browser. It opens fine for me in a TIFF viewer. Both thumbs on the file page show as pink for me, but I see orange opening it on my computer.
identify -verbose
says it's sRGB, but with the photometric intent set to YCrCb, so I'm not sure if the color thing is T272364 or something else. Any software I open this file in throws all sorts of warnings (more than usual for TIFFs, even). AntiCompositeNumber (talk) 22:45, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
- @AntiCompositeNumber: On my laptop, where I use Chrome, I can't open TIFFs. On my phone however I can. This file opens in neither Safari nor Chrome app on my phone eventhough I can't find any other TIFF file that can't be opened using those apps, ergo the issue must lie with the file itself, right?Jonteemil (talk) 22:58, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
