I could have used the word \u2018WordPress\u2019 as well but since the guidelines outlined in this post are applicable to all platforms and websites, I choose to keep it more general.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where should the keywords be placed in a URL? <\/strong>When Google is asked about this question, they officially say that it doesn\u2019t matter very much but what studies show is that it\u2019s better to have keywords at the beginning of the URL rather than in the middle or the end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to avoid keyword stuffing in the URL?<\/strong> Keyword stuffing is a term used when you try to inject keywords in a URL (post title or content) in an unnatural way for the sole purpose of optimizing for search engine crawlers and not users.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid keyword stuffing in your URLs, try not to repeat the same keyword more than once.<\/p>\n<p>For example, DON\u2019T do this:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/services\/<em>seo-packages<\/em>\/<em>seo-packages<\/em>.php<\/p>\n<p>Instead, use keywords wisely without repetition. Here is a better version:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/seo-packages\">https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/seo-packages<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>URL Length<\/h3>\n<p>Although the character limit for URLs is up to 2048 characters, it is recommended to keep the URLs as short as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Any parameters or characters that don\u2019t make sense for users and search engines are better to be avoided.<\/p>\n<h3>Lowercase, Uppercase, and spaces in URL<\/h3>\n<p>Characters in a URL should be lowercase.<\/p>\n<p>Most CMS will allow you to have uppercase letters in a URL i.e. <em>www.example\/My-Url<\/em> but have in mind that this is different from <em>www.example.com\/my-url.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Google and other search engines will interpret these as two different pages.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid any duplicate content issues, make sure that all your URLs are lowercase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>White spaces in a URL:\u00a0 <\/strong>There are cases where your CMS will automatically create URLs from filenames, especially for uploaded images.<\/p>\n<p>When there is a space in the filename this will be translated as <em>%20<\/em> in the URL.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you have an image with the name \u201cSEO Friendly Websites.jpg\u201d and your CMS is not properly configured to use dashes \u2018-\u2018, as separators, this will be shown as \u201cSEO%20Friendly%20Websites.jpg\u201d and this is not user friendly.<\/p>\n<h3>Use of dates in URL<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Should dates be part of a URL? Does it help Google in any way?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The answer is no. Dates should not be used as part of the URL since they don\u2019t offer any benefits for the users or search engine crawlers.<\/p>\n<p>Google uses other mechanisms to identify when a post was published and having the date as part of the URL adds unnecessary complexity.<\/p>\n<h3>Folder structure<\/h3>\n<p>As a general rule of thumb, it is good to keep your folder structure (that\u2019s the slashes used as separators in the URL) to 2 levels maximum.<\/p>\n<p>Consider the following examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>URL directly linked to the domain:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wordpress-blogging\/\">https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wordpress-blogging\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>URL in a folder that is 1 level down:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/ebook\/wordpress-seo-guide\/\">https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/<strong>ebook<\/strong>\/wordpress-seo-guide\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>URL in folders, 2 levels down:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/<strong>services\/seo\/<\/strong>seo-packages<\/p>\n<p>Anything below, it\u2019s better to be avoided. For example, this URL:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/<strong>services\/seo\/local-seo\/<\/strong>introduction<\/p>\n<p>is too much and can be simplified to either:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/<strong>services\/<\/strong>local-seo\/ or even better to<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/local-seo\/<\/p>\n<h3>Should you add the category name in the URL?<\/h3>\n<p>In WordPress, you can add your blog posts into categories, and depending on your settings, the category name may be shown in the URL.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you can have something like this:<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.example.com\/watches\/best-watches-to-buy<\/p>\n<p>This is OK as long as your category names are meaningful and make sense to the users.<\/p>\n<h2>How to configure URLs in WordPress<\/h2>\n<p>Configuring your URLs in WordPress is very easy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/best-wordpress-seo-practices\/\"><strong>WordPress is an SEO friendly<\/strong><\/a> platform and all you have to do is go to SETTINGS -&gt; PERMALINK SETTINGS and choose one of the <em>common settings<\/em> or write your custom structure.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6305\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/best-wordpress-permalink-structure-1024x673.png\" alt=\"Best WordPress Permalink Structure\" width=\"1024\" height=\"673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/best-wordpress-permalink-structure-1024x673.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/best-wordpress-permalink-structure-600x394.png 600w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/best-wordpress-permalink-structure-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/best-wordpress-permalink-structure-768x505.png 768w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/best-wordpress-permalink-structure.png 2000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By choosing the <em>Post name<\/em> setting, your URLs will be directly linked to your domain without any folders or intermediators.<\/p>\n<p>When publishing a post or a page, WordPress will try and create the URL based on the title of the page.<\/p>\n<p>What you can do to optimize your URL is to click the EDIT button that is below the post title, configure your URL and then click the SAVE DRAFT or UPDATE buttons.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-6306\" src=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/create-custom-url-wordpress-1024x362.png\" alt=\"How to edit WordPress URL\" width=\"1024\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/create-custom-url-wordpress-1024x362.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/create-custom-url-wordpress-600x212.png 600w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/create-custom-url-wordpress-300x106.png 300w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/create-custom-url-wordpress-768x272.png 768w, https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/create-custom-url-wordpress.png 1934w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Use 301 Redirects for any URL change<\/h2>\n<p>Whether you are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/how-to-redesign-a-website-without-losing-seo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>doing a website redesign<\/strong><\/a> or migrating to https or just optimizing your URLs, it is necessary to add 301 redirects to let Google (and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reliablesoft.net\/top-10-search-engines-in-the-world\/\"><strong>search engines<\/strong><\/a>) know that you are changing the address of a page.<\/p>\n<p>301 redirects will help you maintain your SEO rankings and improve the user experience since any URLs bookmarked by users, will still work.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of ways to add 301 redirects in WordPress.
