schilderijen van UB Leiden[edit]

Hallo Maarten,

Mijn mail adres is [email protected].

Puoi darmi indicazioni? grazie michele

Photo deletion question[edit]

Hi, I am new at this. First upload. I have received autorisation from author to use this photo. How can I make this clear and avoid deletion? Thank you

Renaming file[edit]

Hello again, could you rename this file to "Free-ranging mixed breed dog"? Thank you. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mexican_Street_Dog.jpg

License migration[edit]

Hi Multichill! How are you doing?

If I remember correct you promised me more than 10 years ago that I would get a million barnstars if I finished the license migration of GFDL!

Well its finished yet but I'm getting closer.

I have been visiting wikis around the world trying to make them clean up files. As you can imagine it is a never ending job because if local wikis do not have active users that monitor new uploads it will soon be messy.

But I have been implementing the license migration templates on some wikis that did not have it. And I have been helping wikis finish the license migration.

On Japanese Wikipedia it was extra fun because they had 64k files licensed GFDL. 37k had GFDL and 27k had GFDL-no-disclaimers. But to make it crazy they had a fancy system where some of the files with GFDL had disclaimers and some did not. So many of the files that was moved to Commons did not have the disclaimers they should have or they had disclaimers but should not. Also the license migration system was very complex. But I managed to change the templates so files without disclaimers used the template GFDL and files with disclaimers used the template GFDL-ja. I also completed the license migration.

On a few wikis GFDL-ja means GFDL-self but on Commons that would be "files from Japanese Wikipedia with disclaimers". So I fixed FileImporter to do it right.

Recently I have been touring wikis to see if GFDL only were listed on MediaWiki:Licenses. It was on about 54 wikis and I managed to get 36 wikis to remove it and 18 have not (yet). (m:User:MGA73/Media per wiki)

And check this out en:Template:No more GFDL :-) That should help too.

So now I think there is a chance to finish in 2022!

But now I also know that if I had done this more systematic from the beginning it would have been so much easier. Much of the trouble and work could have been avoided.

For example MediaWiki:Licenses and template names should have been fixed. Some wikis still use GFDL with disclaimers for new uploads! That should have been stopped years ago. And we should have global bots that tag all new uploads that do not have a license.

Anyway just wanted to share the news with you. If you have any ideas they are of course welcome. --MGA73 (talk) 18:01, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question: What if someone gave a permission via OTRS in 2007 for the license GFDL. Do you remember if we relicense because it is before November 2008 or did we always say that if there is an OTRS then migration is not possible? --MGA73 (talk) 11:22, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MGA73: I'm traveling (now that it's still possible). Will reply later. Multichill (talk) 12:13, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Safe travel! --MGA73 (talk) 13:07, 20 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Are you still traveling? --MGA73 (talk) 18:06, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I asked someone else about OTRS and the reply was that we can probably relicense. Do you agree? --MGA73 (talk) 12:34, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I checked some of the old files with an OTRS and my bot marked them with migration=relicense so I guess we agreed that OTRS does not block for relicense. We just have to be carefull to see if the file was originally uploaded somewhere else. So I will relicense the files with an OTRS too. --MGA73 (talk) 10:32, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lidewij (talk) 12:32, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Citation needed"[edit]

Is this edit, where you added a "citation needed" to another user's comment, the best way for an administrator to act? I am unaware of any Wikimedia Commons policy on this, but common decency and w:Wikipedia:TPO suggest that this is not the most productive way to contribute to a discussion.  Mysterymanblue  19:00, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a user comment, that's an picture with a nonsense description. If it would have been a user comment, it would have been signed with ~~~~ so it would be clear who is stating this opinion. Multichill (talk) 19:08, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously we disagree, but I think it's pretty clear from the position of the image and the context in prose that the image is a part of a specific user comment.  Mysterymanblue  19:16, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't clear to me who added the picture. Multichill (talk) 19:55, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I have attributed the image caption to the user who added the image and have removed the "citation needed".  Mysterymanblue  20:07, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping[edit]

Thank you for letting me know about the discussion. Unfortunately right now a family member is very ill and I am going to leave it to the community to decide that one. I don't think that Mr. Trung is really here for educational purposes, nor is that barnstar particularly educational, but faced with the mortality of a close member of my family, I just don't have the time or energy to fight for anything - even against a serial troublemaker. Invitation to submit a session proposal to WikidataCon 2021 (deadline 20 October)[edit]

Hi. I'm writing to you as a co-curator of the 'Sister projects' track along with Susanna Ånäs for WikidataCon 2021, which will take place online on 29-31 October 2021. The conference website is at [1].

We would like to invite you to submit a session proposal to the track, specifically a lightning talk on how you have been working with SDC here on Commons. We would also love to hear about any other work you are doing, or would like to do in the future, that relates to Wikidata and its sister projects.

If you are interested, you can find information about how to submit a session proposal at [2], and you can access the submission form at [3]. Please submit a session proposal through the Pretalx process so that we can review and schedule it appropriately - and make sure to mark it as a 'Sister projects' track proposal. Please note that we cannot accept a session outside of the Pretalx process. We also encourage you to submit talks to other tracks if you are interested!

Note that the deadline for submitting proposals is the 20th October - sorry for the short notice! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 14:33, 18 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Medea-chart database on old nautical charts[edit]

Hi, I’m sending this message to all participants of Commons Wikimaps listed here, so that I can be pretty sure it will get to some of you. I am the Principal Investigator of the ERC funded project Medea-Chart ([5]), hosted by the University of Lisbon, whose scientific objective is the study of the genesis, evolution and use of nautical charts from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. One of the visible outcomes of our project is the Medea-Chart database, aimed at storing and making available information and images of all extant manuscript nautical charts: [6]. Since the images of old maps and charts are now in the public domain and our database is open to all, I’m sure your project could benefit from it. The most obvious way would be to download from there all the images you are interested in, but I imagine you could use the tool for more sophisticated purposes. For now, I invite all of you to go there, browse the database, do geographical searches, read our “Chart of the Week” mini-articles, etc. You don’t even need to register for that. Registration is only required for those interested in downloading high resolution images or producing reports. Best wishes and have fun, Alvesgaspar (talk) 21:21, 17 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

GLAM and batch uploads[edit]

Hi! Institution:Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen and some other GLAM are interessted in working together with Wikipedia and some Danish Wikipedians are trying to help batch upload files. Commons:GLAM have some tips to get started but we do not have many Danish Wikipedians that have done mass uploads.

The plan is to do something like File:En såret dansk kriger (1865 painting).jpg but the license template also request a United States public domain tag. And they have made an agreement with the photographers so instead of PD-Art to cover the copyright for the photo they would like to use Cc0. So instead of {{Artwork}} perhaps {{Art Photo}} is better because that would solve the problem of any copyright related to the photo. But what copyright tag would be good for the painting? {{PD-old-auto-expired|deathyear=1xxx}} or can you think of something better?

I know you use wikidata a lot so I found one of your uploads File:Coin of Caracalla, Roman Emperor, from Gabala, Yale University Art Gallery, inv. 1938.6000.1271 - YDEA - 139752.jpg to show them that wikidata can fill out all fields. I guess that if they can figure out how to put data in wikidata then uploading the files on Commons would be easier because then you do not need to add much info on Commons. Your bot would take care of structured data? --MGA73 (talk) 17:33, 10 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@MGA73: that's good news! Commons:Guide to batch uploading & Commons:Guide to content partnerships might also contain useful info (but might be slightly outdated).
To get the US part {{PD-old-auto-expired}} should be used instead of {{PD-old-auto}} ([7]).
It's good that the museum explicitly adds a license. We have the {{Licensed-PD-Art}} template for that. See for example {{Licensed-PD-Art|PD-old-auto-expired|cc-by-sa-4.0|deathyear=1915}} on File:Robert Hermann Raudner - Schleißheimer Linden - 8546 - Bavarian State Painting Collections.jpg.
My workflow is to first add the metadata to Wikidata (Q29941317). If the metadata is complete, this will trigger an upload. Currently only works for paintings and is described at d:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Automated image uploads.
As you can see on File:Robert Hermann Raudner - Schleißheimer Linden - 8546 - Bavarian State Painting Collections.jpg, the artwork template is empty. Multichill (talk) 10:48, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! We have some good places to look for photos but the tricky part is that we lack users that knows how to mass upload. For example the Queen of Denmark just released 10.000 photos on https://kgl-fotosamling.kongernessamling.dk/login/welcome.jspx and I have an old idea of copying thousands of old maps from https://hkpn.gst.dk/ to Commons.
I think our guy working on "Statens Museum for Kunst" will like your tips with the licenses. And I think he likes wikidata too so if he can figure out how to do it right it should be great. --MGA73 (talk) 11:58, 11 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

digital representation of (P6243)[edit]

Hi, I noticed that you removed some of these statements. So what should be the value for this property? The modeling page doesn't exit yet: Commons:Structured data/Modeling. Thanks, Yann (talk) 11:11, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

PYANN (PYann) In this case nothing because no item for the photo exists.
You might have missed why digital representation of (P6243) was created: To link a photo of a 2D artwork here to the item on Commons. For example to link File:Man in a Blue Cap - Jan van Eyck - Google Cultural Institute.jpg to Portrait of a Man with a Blue Chaperon (Q3553389). The usage on Commons has become a bit of a mess and it still needs to be cleaned up.
Probably best to use fabrication method (P2079) digital photography (Q173095) for these cases. Multichill (talk) 12:27, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but this property was used in this case File:Maison des têtes - statue du tonnelier alsacien (Colmar).jpg, which is not a 2D artwork, so I don't undertand the distinction with the "depicts" statement. And in this case File:Auto wreck, USA, 1923.jpg? Regards, Yann (talk) 12:44, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Yann: that's exactly the mess I'm talking about. For the second case: The target of digital representation of (P6243) should always be a specific instance, not a class of things like digital photograph (Q85431214) & gelatin silver print (Q64029133). Multichill (talk) 12:53, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I am cleaning these. For File:Auto wreck, USA, 1923.jpg, whould we have instance of (P31) or fabrication method (P2079) for gelatin silver print (Q64029133). I would like to be able to search all images of, say a place, which are either digital or not. Thanks, Yann (talk) 13:07, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And that's where you hit the point why I haven't done that much for SDC in the last couple of months: Our search engine is still very incomplete. When a file here is linked to an item on Wikidata (using digital representation of (P6243) or some other method), it would be a bit stupid if we have to duplicate all depicts (P180) statements (we're not monkeys to quote Jean-Fred). The other day I was talking with Jarek about this on User_talk:Jarekt#Adding_more_structured_data_to_search. The basic idea is to add some more logic to Module:Artwork that grabs the relevant data from Wikidata (like depicts statements) and include it in the filepage here so that it turns up in search. We're not there yet, but it sure would be a lot better than to try to duplicate everything here. Multichill (talk) 13:20, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Also would you main having a look at Commons talk:Structured data#CC-0 conflicts with PD statement? Thanks, Yann (talk) 11:22, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a look and reply over there. Multichill (talk) 12:27, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Forgotten deletion requests[edit]

Hallo Multichill, happy new year,
with the vandalistic mass deletion requests of J. Patrick Fischer, you have already left a suitable comment in most cases ("no wonder our deletion backlog is huge if people start dumping it full with useless deletion requests. Is this the purge of East-Timor? I contest all these nominations of these by now historic military photos"). Unfortunately you missed some deletion requests (see below). I have already commented there. But it is surely better if two users comment there for keeping.

--Ciao • Bestoernesto 07:21, 2 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adding main subject (P921) to media that already has both depicts (P180) and digital representation of (P6243) does not make any sense.[edit]

Like this edit. /ℇsquilo 11:17, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It does and you shouldn't be removing it (bot will restore it anyway). It's part of the effort to get digital representation of (P6243) cleaned up. Multichill (talk) 11:23, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

questions about p6243[edit]

I remember you. I remember you every time I get that one warning when uploading an image that I don't need to upload. Your improvements to commons have made me more sloppy and carefree!

I was glad to see your software making changes to the structured data. I added p6243 to my files to keep that bot off them. It seemed that there was a relationship between the bot (not the author) and my real life involving free drinks and other crap like that. Of course, without actual evidence or anything real that would correlate this, I very well might be wrong. Putting my own structured data on my files could hardly be considered an over-reaction.

My relationship with p6243 is mostly via scans. Any "label" I use to link the files stru. data to the item will always feel like I am saying "red is red". Scans are weird things. They have duplicates sometimes at Internet Archive and/or Hathitrust and/or Library of Congress and/or other sources (colleges, governments, etc). Many times, the file here is not an exact duplicate of the source as some blank pages are removed, flaws in pagination are fixed, I have one that needs a whole section removed and a different scan used instead. I tried to link the p6243 to what that file was a version of and got complaints.

Wikidata has an item p996: "document file on Commons", it would be nice for my "red is red or 2 is 2" problem (self-definition is supposed to be avoided except in proofs where it is the goal) if there were a "Item on wikidata" for scans. It is a hair split, but wikidata seems to be a magnet for hairsplitters.

Okay, all of that being said, I am curious what the new requirements for the structured data are. I read here and there about "Main subject", which, for the current set of scans I am working on will be "childrens literature", I suppose. "Main subject" will be more of a challenge with novels and starts to border on "genre" which is such a nightmare and I avoid more anything else here other than the psychological profiles of fictional characters. Eek!

I completely understand that scans (pdf, djvu and other uncollated files) are a small portion of the files here and in many ways, a weird case. Also, if you are the same MultiChill, it is always nice to see your activity. If you are not the same, well, it is always nice to remember "smarter" times here.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 17:40, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion at administrator noticeboard about User:BotMultichillT[edit]

Hi. Just to let you know, a user has started a discussion over at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections about your bot. From Hill To Shore (talk) 23:45, 5 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Essential singularity[edit]

Hello I'm a mathematics student! I have a doubt about the graph plot under "Essential singularity". The hue represents the absolute value and the luminance represents the argument, right? It's given otherwise there. Kindly correct me if I'm wrong. Raina Mary Thomas [email protected] 2409:4073:294:4895:2C3F:2325:6A6F:727 14:15, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

File:Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, larger.jpeg[edit]

Hi, What's the problem with these coordinates ː https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Raising_the_Flag_on_Iwo_Jima,_larger.jpeg&diff=622082751&oldid=622082442&diffmode=source Thanks, Yann (talk)

@Yann: nothing wrong with these coordinates, just the wrong location. The coordinates shouldn't be on M77731066, but on Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima (Q117693). That's where I moved the coordinates of depicted place (P9149). Just the template logic still needs to be updated to show the {{Object location}}. See also Commons:Structured_data/Modeling/Depiction#Works_of_art. 16:04, 16 January 2022 (UTC)

Ciell (talk) 20:46, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Zie Commons_talk:Rijksdienst_voor_het_Cultureel_Erfgoed#Oude_templates_opruimen. Multichill (talk) 20:54, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

author = Creator not Category[edit]

Moin Moin Multichill from Germany, your bot did the following edit and not we have around 500 pictures in the Category:Uses of Wikidata Infobox with no instance of because the Category include the Wikidata Infobox. I think it will be better to use Creator like my diff shows, then they will not be displayed in the Issue-Category. Could you switch this? Thanks and Nog een prettige dag. ;) --Crazy1880 (talk) 10:26, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Crazy1880: looks like I made a copy & paste mistake in {{RCE-author}}. I corrected that and ran the bot again. Should be all fixed now. Thanks for pointing out. Multichill (talk) 11:20, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, yes, looks good --Crazy1880 (talk) 11:23, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Something is not working[edit]

Hi! There is something after this edit Special:Diff/555269412 that makes the page crash. Perhaps you can have a look? --MGA73 (talk) 10:47, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Moin, its the parameter "author" its too long. Perhaps this has to be shown in the parameter title? Regards --Crazy1880 (talk) 11:26, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MGA73 and Crazy1880: User:Jarekt is working on Module:Artwork to do author parsing. I removed the code that is causing the template to explode. I'll collect some test cases in Category:Pages with script errors so we can improve the code. Multichill (talk) 11:32, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. (And yes the author is not used correctly on this example) --MGA73 (talk) 11:40, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
See Module_talk:Artwork#line_1485:_attempt_to_get_length_of_field_'?'_(a_nil_value). Multichill (talk) 11:42, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: Geograph Update Bot now providing references with its SDC updates[edit]

Now that we have references in SDC, I've arranged for Geograph Update Bot, when updating an SDC statement, to also add a reference indicating that the information comes from Geograph. It follows the guidance at d:Help:Sources for referencing databases. For example, Special:Diff/623606324 is the bot's most recent SDC edit. I mention this in case you want to either suggest improvements or to adopt a similar scheme for GeographBot's uploads. --bjh21 (talk) 14:36, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bjh21: that looks nice. I'll see if I can update the upload bot to do the same. Multichill (talk) 18:20, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Creator templates maintenance categories[edit]

Hi, Category:Creator templates without home category contains 1,161 pages. Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item missing linkback contains 276 pages. I emptied the later manually a few weeks ago, and it is a tedious work. Would it be possible to fix these with a bot? Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:33, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Yann: the instructions for Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item missing linkback are on that category. Jarek wrote that and might have some ideas. Multichill (talk) 20:56, 24 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure it is possible to do with a bot, but the 3 step process outlined in the Category:Creator templates with Wikidata link: item missing linkback is quite quick. You touch every page, run this query and paste the results in QuickStatements. This "manual" process only takes minutes. Category:Creator templates without home category is more work. --Jarekt (talk) 02:42, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
