Thanks for uploading File:Coin-2euro-commemorative-2.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

I see many Euro coins being uploaded here. This one isn't my normal upload. But even though there are many pages explaining copyright of stamps, where is the description for coins? Gone Postal (talk) 10:54, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I see that you chose to just delete it rather than bothering to talk to me. Fine. Whatever. Gone Postal (talk) 10:42, 19 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • He’s almost surely not monitoring this page. You can catch someone’s eye in these situations with {{ping|username}} or, better in this case, transform the warning into a DR (in the file page; there’s a button for that) and discuss it there. -- Tuválkin 09:35, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks. Eventually I will figure out how the coin copyrights work and either find that there are tons of copyvio files here or will request the undeletion of that one. For now, I want to do more work on post related files. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 15:47, 3 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Kenya stamps[edit]

Please be more careful when choosing the copyright templates for Kenya stamps. You need to refer to Commons:Stamps/Public domain#Kenya where you see that {{PD-UKGov}} is the correct one to use for the 1963 stamps. Even though they issued stamps in 1963, their copyright act did not come into effect until 1966. BTW, I doubt it was really necessary to create two individual year categories when there are just 16 stamps uploaded. They could easily all be in Category:Stamps of Kenya without it being overpopulated. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 10:16, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There are a couple of things: Firstly, I am actually the one who is mostly responsible for writing Commons:Stamps/Public domain#Kenya (if you check history you'll see that). I did spend a lot of time trying to figure out all the intricacies, and thought that I did. I guess I was mistaken. In either case these are public domain images. As for the categories, maybe I should have created a gallery or something, but I wanted to make it easier to find the stamps by the year of publication; sorry if I made a choice that wasn't exactly perfect. I mostly uploaded Russian stamps before that, and I simply copied the structure. I intend to continue expanding stamps of Kenya uploads in the future, if you feel strongly about that, please start a discussion about the two created categories, I am going to do whatever is the community consensus. Be well and happy. Gone Postal (talk) 11:09, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Ww2censor I thought about it a little more, some things just seem strange, if you could please comment here: Commons talk:Stamps/Public domain#Kenyan independence, transitional period 15:50, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
I've responded to your transitional period post, but some of what I responded there applies here too. Well I'm sorry I did not check to see who had made the Kenya entry but with a detailed history check now see that it was you. Yeah, for some countries it takes some effort to find the appropriate copyright details we should use but thanks for doing the work. Basically the entry is correct though I would dispute the commencement date which according to The Copyright Act, 1966 was enacted on 1 April 1966, so the December 1965 date seems wrong. We should probably amend the dates. Whether such stamps are public domain under either copyright law is, however, not the point; we really should use the correct copyright template and that's all I was trying to suggest. Regarding the year categories, I've no issue if you are going to populated them but for just a few stamps it would not be worth having them. BTW, if properly categorised, I see most every philatelic related image that gets posted to a recent uploads page by the month. I noticed your recent Kenya stamp uploads in the May 2018 page and you are welcome to add any/all/current pages to your watchlist if interested. Thanks for all your images. Congratulations, dear license reviewer[edit]

If you use the helper scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-.

Hi Gone Postal, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

mw.loader.load('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
mw.loader.load('User:Majora/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.freenode.net. You can also add {{User license reviewer}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:09, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tread carefully[edit]

"I see a lot of deletion closures on that day by Jcb, all of them appear to completely ignore the arguments (note: I am not talking about the votes, I do know that it is not a job of the admin to tally them up, but rather to look at the points raised). I do not have a desire to go through and look at all of those deletion requests, but I think that somebody should, there're more than just this one that should probably be reverted. This is not a good way to fight the backlog."

I believe those deletions were incorrect, I also believe that there is evidence that an admin did not consider the arguments that have been presented. Town hall media[edit]

Thanks for expressing interest in my idea of making voter-politician engagements accessible on the commons. I did not get any responses to my follow up at the copyright discussion pump, so I thought I would talk to you here.

The general idea is to upload audio, video and transcripts of town hall activity by US politicians. These events are not copyright-able because they are not fixed. Furthermore, when conducted by a Federal-level politician, they appear to be automatically in the public domain.

However, what does this mean for a recording of such an event? It seems clear that when the politician's staff makes the recording and releases it, the relevant file is in the public domain. There are many examples of such files labeled as such within the commons, here is one which is an address rather than a town hall: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2016-01-30_President_Obama%27s_Weekly_Address.webm. Basically, somebody has 'mirrored' the file onto the Commons. The 'Source' link is still good.

I have a similar file which I want to mirror/archive in the Commons, the only difference is that the politician is in the legislative branch not executive (still public domain) and that the Source link goes to an announcement which is still there but the download link is no longer good. I believe I can essentially copy the format of the linked page (Obama's address), with the license reading legislative instead of executive, and with the source link pointing to where I downloaded the file. The source link will show that the file was publicly released.

Question 1: Is this analogy between my case and the Obama address correct? So when I upload I tick that it is in the public domain?

Many politicians do not release recordings of their town hall events. I have two questions regarding licensing issues of a recording made by a participant since ownership comes into play.

Question 2: If I make the recording, can I simply upload it as my work?

Question 3: If another person makes the recording and gives me permission to publish it, what is the correct procedure to upload it? State that it is published under a CC license? I ask because getting participants in my town hall project to do the uploading is asking them to do additional work.

Finally, US state level politicians are not subject to the law which makes their work automatically public domain. Their town halls are still not be copyright-able.

Question 4: How does this change things for the three categories above: 1) politician-released recording, 2) my personal recording, 3) a participant recording I have permission to publish?

I am a total Wiki noob, so please take that into consideration when you reply. Dennis.the.Anarcho-syndicalist (talk) 17:20, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dennis.the.Anarcho-syndicalist:
  • Answer 1: As I understand the US copyright law, when the federal government official of any branch makes a statement as a part of their official duties (i.e. not as a private individual talking about their dislike for some pizza or somesuch) then it is in public domain. As such I believe that you are correct.
  • Answer 1b: It depends on how much creativity was used when making a recording. If somebody has placed an automated recording device, akin to a CCTV camera, then we could argue that it did not add any copyright. But if a person did anything creative, even if it is something simple, like turning a microphone towards a person that is speaking at the moment, then it would probably be copyrighted by that individual. Of course, if the participant is also a federal employee, then you are once again ok.
  • Answer 2: Yes. However, I would advise that you state then edit the description of the page and add {{PD-USGov}} to the permission section, to make sure that it is clear that the original speech is not covered by copyright.
  • Answer 3: That is a bit difficult. I have had some files given to me with the permission to publish, and so far I have declined that offer because it is difficult and time consuming. You will have to follow COM:OTRS to ensure that there is a record of that permission. Take a look at that page. Make absolutly sure that there is {{Otrs-pending}} template on the file page when you upload.
  • Answer 3b: State level is strange, and you would have to go and read the applicable laws or talk to somebody more knowlegeable than I am.
  • Answer 4: 1) Public domain recording of a public domain speech (if federal), you are fine 2) Your recording of a public domain speech (if federal), make sure to release it under an appropriate licence, see COM:L 3) COM:OTRS unless they are federal employee performing their duties at the time of recording, then same as 1.
Now, you say that there is a recording, where you do not have a link to the downloadable file any longer, but still have an announcement. Can you please give me a link to that announcement, I will take a look if I would be able to review the file based on that. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 15:02, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying, you've answered my questions for the time being. My question 4 was asking how State-level positions change things, it was poorly written. Yes, one would have to look at each state. CA I noticed has great transparency policies, other states I would expect the opposite.
  • There has been legal precedent for work of a federal politician to be ruled not part of his duties, the politician had written and given a speech to a private group. Hard to see how a public town hall meeting would not be considered as part of official duties. It seems like the politician's staff is trying to do this, however.
  • I've DMed the TeamGT group to ask that they refresh the link or alternatively give me permission to upload a recording to the Commons, they've ignored me so far.

Thanks for uploading File:Bryanskaya Gorozhanka by Bella Gorodetskaya.jpeg.

Thank you.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:A. S. Popov Central Museum of Communication - exhibition - 30 - photo advertisement.jpeg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to [email protected], so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at [email protected].

Thank you!

Help for linking photographs categories[edit]

Moin Moin Gone Postal, like we say in old nordish Germany, you did some changes for a template in many categories for photographs (like here). Now I have the following problem: I edit the following category (this category), which has now increased by several thousand entries. Would you please help to link the categories in Wikidata so that the maintenance category empties itself again? Regards --Crazy1880 (talk) 18:55, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Crazy1880: Hi, I was unaware of that maintenance category. Time permitting I will do something to help you out, after all the goal is to make sure that the media is easier to find. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 18:58, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Crazy1880: . One thing though. Do you have any hints on what is the best practice. Should I create entries for "date photographs in country"? Do I link to something that is already existing? Is there something I need to make sure not to break? ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 19:02, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, thank you very much. Secondly, yes, you should first check if there are already entries in Wikidata and then link these pages together. If there is no entry in Wikidata, a new object should be created. This should then get the value "Wikimedia-category" at P31. Regards --Crazy1880 (talk) 19:24, 3 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Crazy1880: Please take a moment to look at what I have done at Category:September 2019 Myanmar photographs, I think that I have done everything correctly. Unfortunately I must let you know that most likely I will generate significantly more unconnected categories, than I will connect myself. Something like this should really be done automatically, especially since we Wikidata admins will not delete the instance just because there happen to be no files currently within the instance. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 11:01, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have extended your entry at Wikidata once. Important is just: P31=Wikimedia-category. You could automate something, can you tell me if there are already many entries in Wikidata for your categories? Then I can see what I can do. (Even though I'm not an admin at Wikidata.) Regards --Crazy1880 (talk) 19:45, 4 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Crazy1880: First of all, please be careful linking Ireland, I believe there is currently a mistake in the naming of their categories. Secondly, I am a little concerned with this Wikidata approach, that the concept of a photograph taken on a specific date in a country is just a "Commons category". This precludes it from being a subclass or a superclass (or at least I couldn't figure out how to do that). Also I thought of automating the process, since the concept doesn't need Commons category, but since you are saying that it does, then there is no way to automate it (or at least it will be much harder, and require checking if the category actually exists). ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 19:43, 5 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  1. no problem, I'll have a look on it.
  2. I do not know the actual project that is being pursued here.
  3. If a page/category is created here and additionally equipped with the Infobox Wikidata, then a link to Wikidata should also be created. Yes, on Wikidata there is no specialization in categories only from commons, these are all called "Wikimedia-Category" on P31. If subclasses are set, this does not cause any problems. But the value P31 on Wikidata should be filled accordingly, as a minimum.
  4. Apart from that I am also willing to be initiated into the project and to help with words and deeds.

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

  • Hi, you added my movie in this category. I cannot find a hint why this category exists. So I need an explanation from you why you added my movie there. Thanks in advance. --Hockei (talk) 15:57, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Hockei: Hello, thank you for contributing to Wikimedia Commons. The goal here is to collect educationally useful media that is in public domain or is available under a free licence. This means that different people will be adding categories to the media that you may chose to upload, that is a good thing, in fact you can help out by adding media to needed categories. The particular category that you have asked me about is what's called a 'maintenance category' it is not meant to be present forever. In fact, I have now gone and moved it into an appropriate video resolution category. If you were to open up a page that deals with Category:Videos needing display resolution category, you would see at the top description what it is suppose to be for. Thanks again for your contributions. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 16:26, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Unfortunately there is no description. Also not in Category:Video display resolution 1920 x 1080. Otherwise I wouldn't ask you. I could only imagine what are these there for. Because when click on the video it plays a small (360P) but not the highest resolution what people expect. Are these categories made to to change it? --Hockei (talk) 16:41, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Hockei: No, the categories are there to make maintenance easier. The video that gets played depends on the player. You can click on the resolution below the video and open the actual file, in most browsers it will actually play the file in the resolution you have selected. But that is a good question, why is the default so small for contemporary internet. 17:07, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

FoP[edit]

I've really no clue why do you put {{FoP-Russia}} on any of your upload, e.g. this one. Could you please explain? --A.Savin 13:07, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello. I am very happy to explain. Firstly, it is a matter of caution; I have taken a photograph of something, which I have not created, and it was outside, something else may have come into the focus of my photograph and I would not want to fear that the file will be deleted due to some copyright violation just because some admin does not want to figure something out without templates telling them that (it has happened to me on several ocasions). Secondly, it is to separate two different potential copyrights: my own and individuals/organisations designing buildings and postal boxes that I photograph; in the case of this post box I believe that {{PD-ineligible}} may also apply quite well, since nothing else is present in the photo, I will probably change it for this file since I agree that it is a better template. Thirdly, I believe that there is a problem with the current setup of the description pages of files, you say that you have no clue why I put a well known template on the file, and I cannot blame you, it is really unclear; I have started structuring the copyright description a little differently on my newer uploads, hopefully other users (and you as well) will be able to get a clue what is meant. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 13:56, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You add this template without pre-selection because you believe your files to be safer from deletion then; however should FoP be abolished in Russia again (which hopefully never happens, but in Putin's Russia nothing is impossible, alas), you will reach exactly the opposite. --A.Savin 19:58, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In a sense it is possible in any country. We saw what took place with the whole copyright restoration in the States. But that is what I am talking about here, current templates are incorrect. You should have: Separate templates for my copyright and for underlying copyright; and Fall-back templates (i.e. saying Freedom of Panorama applies, if that doesn't apply then it is still PD as a utilitarian object, if it is determined not to be utilitarian object, then it is PD-simple, if not that, then copyright violation). ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 06:25, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, The page Commons:Village_pump/Proposals#Votes_(established_academics,_writers,_artists) does not display properly on my computer, with wikicode breaking up in the middle of your signature. I do not know if that is just me or for more people. Can you switch to default signature, or fix? --Jarekt (talk) 17:45, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jarekt: Hello, and thank you very much for letting me know of a problem. Everything is displaying just fine here. Can you please 1) Let me know if this is still happening, and 2) Tell me exactly what you see (what wikicode do you see). Thank you very much. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 18:00, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind. A reboot of the browser fixed issues with your signature. I guess, the effort of loading some of your icons was too much for my browser and it crashed. This talk page had almost no readable text, but now seems fine. Whatever the issue was only pages with your signature were affected. --Jarekt (talk) 18:51, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ireland[edit]

Hello Gone Postal, Something goes wrong with photographs taken on Ireland. See [1]. Are you able to fix this? Rudolphous (talk) 05:50, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Rudolphous: Ireland can mean two different things, one is apart of United Kingdom, another is Republic of Ireland, this is probably why {{country label}} states the the appropriate category for Ireland is Republic of Ireland. I do not wish to enter the battlefield of what names of countries are "correct" and which are not. It is such a flame war, that I stay as far away from it as possible. Should we say "Czechia" or "Czech Republic"? Don't ask me... So there are two approaches that can be taken: 1) We can mark location in {{taken on}} and {{published on}} as Republic of Ireland or 2) Try to convince those, who maintain {{country label}} that the correct name for Republic of Ireland is just Ireland. I am for #1. But we really need a help of somebody who can write bots, because it's a huge task. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 11:12, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Videos_in_Catalonian has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Post[edit]

--P.Fisxo (talk) 07:55, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

℺ Gone Postal ( ) 15:38, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Gone Postal: из ваших слов следует, что категория Post in Korolyov должна включать в себя и здания, и транспорт, и банки, и экономику, и сам город. --P.Fisxo (talk) 20:34, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • Нет, вы меня неверно поняли. Не всё, что происходит в городе связано с почтой. Только почтовые вещи. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 17:57, 30 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Quick review on deleted genetic map[edit]

Please, read Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Eastern_Hunter_Gatherers_Eurasia_context.jpg. Deletion was apparently wrong decision based on bad faith DR. Genetic testing is a legitimate science that is used to determine human migration patterns and genealogy, it has nothing to do with dubiousity, as it is claimed on the nomination page. File was originally uploaded at flickr by Henry Finter. --185.134.130.77 18:10, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • I do not know enough to make a determination to either support the deletion or undeletion. Unfortunatly I must advise to either file an undeletion request yourself or to seek another user who can help you out. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 12:26, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Correct category[edit]

This video is tagged for [[:Category:Stamps]] and I don't know why. Is this really correct? I've been trying to categorise as many of the miscellaneous items in that category. Several are just badly categorised. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 13:28, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Ww2censor: As I understand it the video talks about the theft of a postal stamp that costs 2 million dollars. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 14:06, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I suppose, in that case, it would be better in the "Category:Stamps of Russia" category rather then the parent category. Ww2censor (talk) 14:17, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ww2censor: The video in question is in Chechen language, which I do not speek. But this shows the same person talking about the same thing, and in that story we can see that the stamp in question is actually an american stamp, even though it was in Russia. That stamp was made in 1868, and is quite expensive, but he has managed to pay only 40 dollars for it, and later it was stolen by his girlfriend. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 14:32, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. So, I see you re-categorised it as "Stamps of the United States 1860-1869" which is probably the best place for it. Maybe the description should be refines to reflect the facts you have outlined above. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 18:26, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notification about possible deletion[edit]

Commons-emblem-issue.svg
Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

here's another one for you to delete -- File:Глухарь на почтовом конверте СССР.png -- Wesha (talk) 21:36, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Wesha: I do not see a reason to delete this file, nor am I an administrator. I think you may have confused me with somebody. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 11:21, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Then you should talk to security because somebody clearly hacked your account. -- Wesha (talk) 15:48, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • @Wesha: That is a very different type of a file, the one you have linked, in my opinion does not any issues with copyright. In fact I have added it to my watchlist, in case if anybody will nominate it for deletion, I would probably vote {{vk}}. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 08:05, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
        • That file includes the a side "without a postal stamp" on it, and a copyright sign. According to your earlier arguments, "the side with the stamp is okay but the side without isn't, even when they are just different sides of the same envelope". -- Wesha (talk) 17:28, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About some templates[edit]

Hi, Gone Postal. Thanks for taking care of {{Countryphotodecade}} and {{Countryphotocentury}}.

Maybe there is some further help you could give. What do I mean to achieve? Let's take a practical example: photos of Germany. You can see that both Category:19th-century photographs of Germany and Category:20th-century photographs of Germany are subcategories of Category:Historical photographs of Germany; but Category:21st-century photographs of Germany is not. I think a correction in some of the templates should be made, in order to enable this last thing.

Hope you understand what I mean. Thank you very much in advance. Regards, --Fadesga (talk) 16:04, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Perhaps we can start a public discussion, but I read "historical" to mean "of the past". In that sense, I would place photographs that were taken before current time into Historical, and leaving current ones aside. As such I would like to see the following in the Historical category: 18th century, 19th century, 20th century, 2000s, 2010s, January 2020, February 2020, March 2020, April 2020, May 2020, June 2020. July would be added in a few days, and in January 2021 the whole 2020 will be there, with the separate months removed. I am pedantic about it, but this is something that I think can be discussed by entire community. @Fadesga: Do you want to start a VP discussion? ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 16:09, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Gone Postal. It is not a bad idea after all. Go ahead! --Fadesga (talk) 16:12, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Scranton Official Year book[edit]

I wondered why you uploaded 150 or so images from this book as most seem unnecessary and not really within scope unless you are going to use several of them. Even then syntax can display individual pages of a pdf that I see you have uploaded from here https://archive.org/download/officialyearbook00vand/officialyearbook00vand.pdf and editors can use any individual page by using the syntax as shown here w:Wikipedia:Extended image syntax#Page when they want to use a page. It seems like a lot of effort for little return. Do you not know about page syntax from a pdf? Ww2censor (talk) 13:48, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Ww2censor: If you have noticed, I did not just dump the files here (I rarely do so), I went through and categorised each page in the appropriate categories depending upon what is depicted there. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 14:06, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed I saw that but it still seems like a lot of work that few editors will use or appreciate the effort. Personally I would have only uploaded the pdf and added it to several appropriate categories. Ww2censor (talk) 14:38, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I do understand what you are trying to say, but I disagree with it. Let's look at File:Official Year Book Scranton Postoffice 1895-1895 - 051.png for example. I have placed this image in Category:Hotels in the United States, I believe that if a person were to be looking for history of hotels in the US they will find this page useful. However, this is the only advertisement of the hotel in this book, and adding the whole book into that category actually would serve no purpose, because there would be no way to tell a person who is following a link from that category why it is there. Most likely adding the whole book would simply be reverted eventually, when a person come in, looks at the first 20-30 pages and realises that there are no hotels there. The negative response I can anticipate would be that I could have only uploaded the PDF, and then extracted advertisements out of it... but that would simply do exactly the same thing that we have right now, with the only exception being that we would have more reencodings in the path from original to the image that we have and would also require me to do significantly more work. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 14:50, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ww2censor: But anyhow, at this moment I am not planning to import any more books. I do have plans to add many stamp images in a relatively near future (maybe a month or so). ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 14:55, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Where did you find a term of 80 years to use in this edit?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:28, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Jeff G.: Is the author not from Colombia? If I am incorrect, please either fix or let me know how to fix. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 03:35, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, he was from Colombia, but the book was published in Brazil, so I think the copyright rules would be those of Brazil.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:24, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that is actually an interesting question. I think in most countries copyright law is written is written in a very strange way, it applies to works published in the country, and also by the citizens of the country who published abroad. So in 70 years Brazil will say that the work is in public domain, but Colombia will most likely argue that it is still 10 years under copyright. USA will probably just go with Brazil, since that's where the work was first published. But what about Commons policy? Do we respect Colombian copyright? I am unsure about these intricacies. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 04:29, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Old license reviews[edit]

Hi! Do you have any way to find old reviews like File talk:9 мая в Якутске! Главный праздник страны.webm and perhaps make a formal review? --MGA73 (talk) 17:58, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks, I thought I already did, but I will that to double check. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 03:52, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @MGA73: Unfortunately that particular file I have just nominated for deletion. I hope that there will be a way to review it, but currently there's not. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 05:54, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

        • I have actually started adding it and then realised that I cannot in all honesty review it at this moment. I should have been more diligent in my "unofficial" reviews. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 16:24, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay another question: File:Paper Radio - Maximum Tremolo.opus has a free license but what about the music? How do we know it is PD? --MGA73 (talk) 15:26, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Are you taking about 2 seconds at the beginning and 3 or so seconds in the end? I am pretty sure this would be something "pod safe" given that this is a radio show from Australia, they are not likely to do copyvio on every single episode. But I do hear you that we should try to find out. Do you know of any tools which can search for music? I know of such things on smartphones, but I do not have one. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 15:40, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and the 5 seconds and the 3 seconds and the 2 seconds in the mid :-) I only used an app on smartphoto - not on PC. If you don't know for sure we should probably aim for COM:DM. --MGA73 (talk) 18:36, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MGA73: I have gone through in the editor and silenced all the portions where the music is dominant and has no voice over it. You can still sort of make it out in the background every so often, but that is definitely DM. I am still of the opinion that more likely than not it was pod-safe, but I would not want a file that is on the Main Page removed as a copyvio in the middle of the day. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 05:22, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I reviewed the file :-) --MGA73 (talk) 05:58, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again! On User:EatchaBot/Files-requiring-license-review-gallery-uploaded-by/Gone_Postal there are 112 files that need a review. Perhaps we could fix that? Maybe you could help check the files again to see if link is working, if file is (still) free, if there are too much music in the videos etc. If file is bad then fix problem or nominate for deletion. If file is good then I can review. --MGA73 (talk) 16:03, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! On this discussion you opposed saying "at least until an alternative way to release the work uder a copyleft licence without requiring attribution will begin to exist.".

Reading https://creativecommons.org/Version4 I noticed this:

"Enabling more anonymity, when desired Version 3.0 included a provision allowing a licensor to request that a licensee remove the attribution from an adaptation, if she did not want her name associated with it. Version 4.0 expands that provision to apply not only to adaptations but also to verbatim reproductions of a work. Licenses now account specifically for situations where licensors wish to disassociate themselves from uses of their works they object to, even if their work hasn’t been modified or published in a collection with other works."

I wonder if that is usable? --MGA73 (talk) 18:26, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Crinoline Church postcard, with cipher[edit]

Thank you for your thanks re the Crinoline Church postcard. I am working on a private collection of postcards which was found in a jumble sale in the 1990s, and some of those were written in a private code by a young couple in 1904-1905. A friend and I have decrypted the code. I am in the process of uploading all the coded backs of the cards now (I have uploaded everything else). I am wondering whether to delay publishing the decryptions/translations to give people the fun of trying to decrypt it themselves, first. I have been considering waiting for a week or two before publishing all the decryptions, plus information about how the code works. Alternatively, instead of writing the decryptions on the image file pages, I could put all the decryptions and translation crib onto a single pdf,and upload that separately from the image files, so that the amateur decryptors can still have their fun. I would be interested to hear your opinion about this. Cheers. Storye book (talk) 17:15, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Stamps of Indonesia by year[edit]

Is there a reason so many of the newer categories in Category:Stamps of Indonesia by year are empty? It doesn't seem like they are hidden in the older stamps of Indonesia by year category to me. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 22:42, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Ricky81682: About 4500 files are going to be uploaded within a day or so, currently I am running the upload and just wanted for the categories to be ready. If you will check my uploaded files you will see the progress of it. The categories will definitely not remain empty, and I did not create any for the files that I will not be uploading. I know that it may be slightly inconvenient to create cats and then upload, but it is much worse to upload to parent cat only to then manually move about (I did that for first couple of countries and quickly realised the error) and also it would be bad to upload files with only a red category link. It is the lesser of three evils. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 03:56, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Just the first sentence was all I needed. I just wanted to see if there was a coding error or something I was missing. I see a lot of Finland and other stamps that are missing. In the future, you could just wait for the uploads as the red links will show up immediately at Special:WantedCategories but I'm happy you're on it. Have a happy new year! -- Ricky81682 (talk) 04:11, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Removing categoreis[edit]

Dear Gone Postal. Thank you for your edits. May I ask why removing categories of the July 2019 Slovakia photographs type? Thanks!--Jetam2 (talk) 11:31, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Jetam2: Hello. Thanks for contacting me. The reason for that is actually pretty simple, it is a concept called COM:OVERCAT. Most likely I have done that either at the same time or immediately before or after adding a category for the photographs taken on a specific day of July 2019. If you would give me a link to the photograph in question I can tell you which day it is currently in. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 18:08, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It was in this diff, for example. but now that I looked again, I noticed that the template you added creates a category for the day the picture was taken. A bit of microcategorization, if you asked me (it might be better to have 40 pictures for a month together than spread them around ten categories with a few each) but I understand and don't object.--Jetam2 (talk) 18:19, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Your stamp uploads[edit]

Hi, Magog the Ogre has now increased the number of my philately gallery pages per month from 1 page per month, being 31 days per month on one page, to 5 days per gallery page being 6 or 7 separate pages per month. Hopefully this is enough individual monthly pages to avoid any of the issues we had. I also hope that when you restart uploading the new 5 day pages will accommodate your uploads without going over the bot's 6,000 per day limit (if possible try to keep it around 5,000) and exceeding the page size limits. If not, I'll have to request another gallery page change and you will temporarily stop uploading until it gets altered again. As I previously mentioned, please check that you are not uploading the same Colnect stamps that have already been bulk uploaded. Cheers Ww2censor (talk) 13:36, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Commons[edit]

Hi,

Hope you are well. I have seen that you have recently active in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. This page is currently the only page where user problems (conduct issues, and other unacceptable behavior, etc.) get reported.

I am working on facilitating the Universal Code of Conduct enforcement discussion on Commons which focuses users’ conduct. That is why I am inviting to participate in the discussion to give your valuable opinion.

You can do so by participating in the public on-wiki discussion on Commons: Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. There are a few questions regarding enforcement you can answer. Please feel free to include anything you find relevant.

I also encourage you to participate in the survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeK7gTSZ2PSNiekEKPcC2UvnkJaQt8iVPWRXZbk27U9E8fOIQ/viewform

The survey has a different set of questions, and you can response to them anonymously. It is not a long survey and should take around 10 minutes to complete.

I want you to know that your input is very valuable and it will help to us better shape the UCoC enforcement pathways for our beloved Commons community. I hope you participate. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 08:35, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

On the mainpage - well done. Ww2censor (talk) 08:37, 14 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ww2censor: Thanks. I have been away for quite some time, I will try to contribute more now. The large upload will be restarted in a little while, but I'll probably take it slowly. Lots of things need to be sorted out due to long time being out of the loop. ℺ Gone Postal ( ) 06:18, 10 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Of Mice, Monkeys and Stamps[edit]

Priviet,

1. FYI, I have landed here after using your Mickey mouse scan in a discussion here: Commons talk:Derivative works#Wrong example

2. Having read your profile and taking a peek at e.g. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Enperor Meiji c.jpg

A. Do you have an URL of the original "garish" rendition? I take part in a similar discussion about artistic renditions released to Commons: [tried to find this series of half-deleted sketches, but gave up after one minute].

B. Quick FYI: "fascilitate" -> "facilitate"

C. If you encounter "Placement of a camera is sufficient to pass as creativity" type arguments Commons:Deletion requests/File:Почта России. ДТП.ogv, try reminding them also of File:Macaca nigra self-portrait large.jpg that is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_selfie_copyright_dispute

Pictogram voting comment.svg Comment: I don't know if you noticed, but while this video was made by Digital Surveillance Los Angeles this looks like a UK post office per the oval red logo like this one File:Post Office Logo RGB.png.
