This documentation is transcluded from Template:Author assumed/doc.

Used in the author= field when automatically converting unstructured file descriptions to structured file descriptions using an {{information}} template (for example when transferring files from other Wikimedia projects to Commons) in cases where there is a template that asserts that the uploader is the copyright holder (such as {{self}} or {{PD-self}}) but no machine readable author.

The template automatically sets the following categories: Files with no machine-readable author

Usage

{{Author assumed |1= }}

A template such as {{self}} or {{PD-self}} asserts that the original uploader is the copyright holder of the work, but it does not necessarily follow that the uploader is the author. There are exceptions such as inherited works, works made for hire, and cases involving copyright transfers. According to Commons' licensing policy, in cases where the uploader is the author, this should be stated explicitly. Therefore, bots that add structure to file descriptions should avoid fabricating explicit authorship assertions based on the mere presence of templates such as {{self}} or {{PD-self}} and instead use this template.
