Files on Commons use a variety of infoboxes to display file metadata, with different template customized for different types of files. Infoboxes serve several purposes, like organizing the data and displaying it using unified look, adding machine-readable metadata, and localizing (translating) the field names to the language of the viewer. The main infoboxes which are meant to be used primarily in file namespace are:

Infobox fields[edit]

The table below compares the fields of main infobox templates, showing the parameter names used by each template that goes with the field on the left most colum (last verified on 3 August 2013). Some parameter names have several alternatives, for example using upper and lower case, or using underscores or spaces in case of multi-word parameter. In few cases alternative parameter names are different words. Those are listed in separate lines.
